CNN’s “Econundrum: The Environmental Cost of a Day on Earth” is a documentary-style explainer series that explores how everyday human activities impact the planet. The goal was to create a visually compelling motion piece that simplifies complex environmental data into an engaging, story-driven format. Our agency, Motionian, collaborated to produce a visual narrative that blends data visualization, editorial motion graphics, and cinematic storytelling.
The main challenge was to translate abstract environmental data and global statistics into visuals that feel human, emotional, and easy to understand. To address this, we developed a layered motion design approach, combining infographics, natural textures, and atmospheric animation to evoke both awareness and empathy. The creative direction balanced editorial clarity with emotional storytelling, ensuring the video not only informs viewers but also inspires conscious reflection on humanity’s daily environmental footprint.
